THE POWER OF WORDS
http://www.youtube.com/v/JnezpSJwr8c&rel=1 Watch the Movie trailer for the Great Debaters.
When it first came out in the theaters, several months ago, my husband and I went to see this movie.
Typical of many intelligent movies, it was not in the theaters long. But you can get it on Netflix or in the video store.
I highly recommend you do. It is about discipline. It is about compassion. It is about the power of words. It is about moving ahead with purpose against all odds. It is one of the most inspirational movies I have ever seen.
It is rare for movies to be this intelligent. Not erudite, not intellectual, but intelligent. I learned a piece of history, a story I never knew, and a lot about myself.
As an executive, you need to give presentations on a regular basis. In your presentations, the words you choose, and the heart behind them makes all the difference in the world. Whether you are speaking to your board of directors, your employees, or a large account, you must choose your words carefully, you must know your facts, and you must practice. If you need help with your speaking, go to Toastmasters. It is a safe place to practice, and you will learn what is effective and what doesn’t work as well. If you really want to raise the bar, there are great speech coaches around.
In our hyper-competitive business environment, you need to bring your “A” Game every single day. The words you choose, and the way you use them, will largely determine your success, especially when the stakes are high. There has always been tremendous power in words. Use the power to your advantage. Speak the truth, with conviction, and you will see mountains move.
Words can be your best friends, or they can be your worst enemies.
Dare to be excellent with your words.
Committed to your success,
Coach Julia
